President William Ruto has reappointed Professor Julius Nyabundi as the non-executive chairman of the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) for another four-year term.

The new appointment took effect on March 13, allowing Nyabundi to continue serving in the role he first assumed in 2022.

The decision means that Prof Nyabundi will remain at the helm of the council’s board as it continues to oversee the management and administration of national examinations in Kenya.

His leadership is expected to guide the council during a period when the country’s education sector is undergoing several reforms and adjustments.

KNEC is one of the most important institutions in the country’s education system.

It is responsible for preparing, administering, and managing national examinations taken by millions of learners across the country.

These include key tests that determine students’ progression from primary to secondary school and from secondary school to higher learning institutions.

Prof Nyabundi’s reappointment signals confidence in his leadership and the work he has done since he first took up the position three years ago.

During his first term, the council handled several critical tasks, including the administration of national examinations and efforts to strengthen the credibility of the testing process.

The council has also continued to work closely with the Ministry of Education to ensure that examination processes run smoothly and maintain the trust of students, parents, teachers, and institutions of higher learning.

Before joining KNEC as chairman in 2022, Prof Nyabundi had built a strong reputation in Kenya’s education sector.

Over the years, he has served in various academic and administrative roles, contributing to the development of education policies and the management of institutions of higher learning.

Education stakeholders say continuity in leadership at institutions like KNEC is important, especially at a time when the country is implementing new education policies and curriculum changes.

With many learners transitioning through the system each year, the examinations council plays a critical role in ensuring fairness, accuracy, and transparency in how national tests are conducted.

As non-executive chairman, Prof Nyabundi is responsible for providing strategic guidance to the council’s board while supporting the management team that runs the day-to-day operations.

His role includes helping to shape policies, overseeing governance matters, and ensuring that the council meets its mandate effectively.

The reappointment comes at a time when the examinations body continues to focus on improving systems meant to prevent examination irregularities and strengthen confidence in the results released each year.

Education experts believe that experienced leadership within the council can help address challenges such as examination security, technological changes in assessment methods, and the growing number of students sitting national examinations annually.
