Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi on Sunday moved to calm public anxiety following a series of resignations and a growing controversy in the petroleum sector.

In a statement, Wandayi assured Kenyans that fuel supplies remain stable, adding that the government has taken measures to shield consumers from potential losses.

He acknowledged the “recent developments” within the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and its affiliated agencies, noting that the changes had raised concern among the public.

The CS was referring to the exit of several senior officials linked to the ongoing oil import saga.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the developments, he maintained that the situation is firmly under control and that critical systems within the sector remain functional.

Wandayi revealed that the government halted the delivery of a second fuel cargo after new information emerged regarding an earlier shipment that is currently under investigation.

He said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to safeguard public resources and prevent a recurrence of questionable transactions.

“The move was necessary to protect public interest and ensure accountability in the supply chain,” he said.

He emphasised that the government is closely monitoring the situation and working with relevant agencies to establish the facts surrounding the matter.

Investigations into the initial shipment are ongoing, with authorities expected to provide further updates once the process is complete.

Wandayi reassured motorists, businesses and other consumers that there is no immediate threat to fuel availability.

He said the country has sufficient stocks of petroleum products to meet current demand, dismissing fears of possible shortages or sudden price increases.

“We have sufficient stocks of petroleum products to meet current demand,” Wandayi said.

He further defended the government-to-government fuel procurement framework, describing it as stable and resilient despite the controversy.

According to the CS, the arrangement continues to play a key role in ensuring consistent supply and shielding the country from volatility in the global oil market.

Wandayi reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, noting that any individuals found culpable in the ongoing investigations will be held responsible in accordance with the law.

He said the ministry is focused on restoring public confidence while ensuring that operations within the sector proceed without disruption.
