Gachagua argued that the selection of certain aspirants exposed weaknesses within the opposition’s political strategy, particularly in areas considered to be Kalonzo’s stronghold.
He said the decisions had long-term consequences, pointing to instances where leaders elected under one political formation later shifted allegiance.
According to Gachagua, the situation has complicated efforts to build a cohesive opposition front, especially at a time when unity is seen as critical in countering the ruling administration.
He maintained that greater scrutiny should have been applied when identifying candidates to ensure consistency and commitment to shared political goals.
During the visit, Gachagua singled out Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse as an example of what he described as a miscalculation.
He noted that Mutuse was initially part of the Azimio coalition during the election period but later aligned himself with the ruling side after securing his seat.
Gachagua said such developments highlight the risks associated with backing candidates without thoroughly assessing their political leanings and long-term positions.
He suggested that some of the choices made during the nominations stage may have prioritised short-term gains over strategic loyalty.
He further argued that the shifting allegiances have weakened the opposition’s numerical strength in Parliament, making it more difficult to advance its agenda or effectively challenge government policies.
According to him, this has had a ripple effect on the broader political landscape, where unity and consistency are key to maintaining influence.
Gachagua’s remarks come at a time when opposition leaders have been engaging in renewed efforts to consolidate support and strengthen their footing across different regions.
The Ukambani tour is part of a wider strategy aimed at rallying backing and addressing internal concerns that may have undermined past performance.
While Kalonzo has yet to respond publicly to the criticism, the comments are likely to spark fresh debate within opposition ranks over candidate selection and coalition management ahead of future political contests.
