The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has come out in defence of Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and his trade counterpart Lee Kinyanjui amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the importation of substandard fuel into the country.

In a statement issued on April 7, ODM Party Leader Oburu Odinga cautioned the public against targeting Wandayi as investigations into the matter continue.

He urged restraint, noting that premature accusations could undermine efforts to establish the facts.

Oburu said that attempts to publicly “lynch” cabinet secretaries and other officials who are not directly responsible for financial management risk derailing the ongoing investigations.

He emphasised the need to allow investigative agencies to carry out their work independently and without external pressure.

The ODM leader maintained that while the concerns raised over the alleged importation of substandard fuel are serious and warrant thorough scrutiny, it is important to distinguish between those responsible for policy direction and those directly involved in procurement and financial decisions.

He argued that misdirected blame could shift attention away from individuals who may bear actual responsibility.

According to the statement, ODM supports a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the matter, with a view to holding accountable anyone found culpable.

Oburu stressed that the integrity of the investigative process must be protected to ensure credible outcomes that restore public confidence.

He further noted that the energy sector is critical to the country’s economic stability and that any allegations of malpractice should be handled with the seriousness they deserve.

However, he warned against politicising the issue or turning it into a platform for personal attacks against public officials without evidence.

The party also reiterated its commitment to accountability and good governance, stating that no individual should be shielded from scrutiny where there is sufficient cause.

At the same time, it underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting the rights of those mentioned in the ongoing investigations.

The remarks come at a time when public concern has been growing over reports of substandard fuel entering the Kenyan market, raising questions about regulatory oversight and quality control mechanisms.

The issue has attracted widespread attention, with calls for swift action from both government agencies and industry stakeholders.
