According to TSC, IVF services have now been formally activated under the SHA programme.
The services are currently available at Nairobi West Hospital, which is an accredited facility under the scheme.
“The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is pleased to inform all eligible members that the Social Health Authority (SHA) has formally activated In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) services under the SHA Mwalimu Comprehensive Cover,” TSC said in a statement.
The inclusion of IVF marks a significant expansion of the benefits available to teachers under the health cover.
It is expected to support members who require specialised fertility treatment, which has traditionally been costly and out of reach for many.
TSC indicated that the move is part of broader efforts to enhance the quality and scope of healthcare services available to teachers.
The Commission has been under pressure to address concerns raised by members over the adequacy and accessibility of services provided under the SHA cover.
In recent months, teachers have voiced dissatisfaction with aspects of the scheme, citing challenges in accessing certain services and delays in receiving care.
The addition of IVF services is seen as one of the measures aimed at addressing these concerns and improving overall satisfaction among beneficiaries.
The Commission noted that the activation of IVF services followed consultations with relevant stakeholders and a review of the needs of teachers under the scheme.
It added that efforts are ongoing to ensure that more accredited facilities are brought on board to expand access across the country.
Teachers seeking IVF treatment will be required to follow the guidelines set under the SHA programme, including verification of eligibility and referral procedures where necessary.
