“If you read social media, you will think Kenya is going to collapse tomorrow,” Ruto said.
He emphasised that ambassadors play a critical role in shaping the country’s image abroad and should not be swayed by online commentary that may undermine confidence in Kenya.
“You are the face, voice and standard of Kenya beyond our borders. I call upon you to embody that responsibility with integrity, conviction, and a deep sense of purpose,” he added.
The President noted that Kenya continues to make progress in various sectors, including economic growth, infrastructure development, and regional diplomacy.
He said it is the responsibility of diplomats to communicate these achievements accurately and consistently.
Ruto urged the envoys to remain focused on their mandate, which includes strengthening bilateral relations, attracting investment, and promoting trade.
He said a unified and confident diplomatic corps is essential in advancing the country’s interests globally.
At the same time, he acknowledged the influence of digital platforms in shaping public opinion but warned that not all information circulating online is reliable.
He called on ambassadors to rely on verified data and official communication channels when representing the country.
The President also encouraged the diplomats to engage more actively with stakeholders in their host countries, including governments, investors, and the Kenyan diaspora.
He said building strong relationships would help counter negative perceptions and create new opportunities for the country.
Ruto further highlighted the importance of professionalism and accountability in the diplomatic service.
He urged ambassadors to uphold high standards in their work and to act in a manner that reflects positively on Kenya at all times.
The meeting comes at a time when governments around the world are grappling with the impact of social media on public perception and international relations.
Ruto’s remarks underscore the need for a balanced approach that recognises both the power and the limitations of digital platforms.
