Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has protested his removal as deputy party leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), accusing the state of interfering in the party’s affairs and fuelling divisions within its ranks.

Osotsi was removed from the position on Friday, March 27, 2026, during a Special Delegates Convention held at Jamhuri Grounds in Nairobi.

The announcement was made by National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, who named Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Nassir as the new deputy party leaders.

However, in a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday, March 28, Osotsi rejected the process that led to his ouster, saying it did not adhere to the party constitution and lacked legitimacy.

“I acknowledge that two ODM-affiliated meetings were held in Nairobi, and from these parallel gatherings, Kenyans can clearly discern where the true spirit and legacy of Raila Odinga reside,” he said.

Osotsi argued that the existence of parallel meetings exposed deep divisions within the party and raised concerns about the credibility of the decisions made during the convention.

He maintained that the process leading to his removal was flawed and should not be recognised.

The senator further claimed that external forces were influencing internal party decisions, a move he said undermines democracy and weakens political institutions.

He accused the state of attempting to control the direction of the party, warning that such interference could erode public trust.

According to Osotsi, party leadership changes must be conducted in strict accordance with the constitution and established procedures to ensure fairness and transparency.

He insisted that any deviation from these principles compromises the integrity of the party.

The developments come at a time when ODM is undergoing significant internal reorganisation following its recent conventions.

The changes in leadership have sparked debate among members and supporters, with differing views emerging on the direction the party should take.

Supporters of the new leadership have defended the outcome of the Special Delegates Convention, saying it was conducted within the party’s framework and reflected the will of the delegates.

They argue that the changes are necessary to strengthen the party ahead of future political contests.

On the other hand, Osotsi’s remarks highlight growing discontent within sections of the party, particularly among leaders who feel sidelined by the recent decisions.

His statement signals the possibility of further internal disputes if the issues raised are not addressed.

Political analysts note that internal wrangles, if not managed effectively, can weaken party unity and affect its performance in future elections.

They emphasise the need for dialogue and reconciliation to bridge the divisions.
