Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has assured the country that security agencies are taking firm action to address the issue of organised groups involved in violence, commonly referred to as “goons”.

Speaking ahead of the planned Linda Mwananchi rally Kisumu 2026, Kanja said investigations have already been conducted and authorities have identified individuals believed to be behind the funding and mobilisation of such groups.

“This issue of goons will stop. We’ve carried investigations and we know who is funding & mobilizing them.

I want to assure the country that the Linda Mwananchi rally in Kisumu on Sunday will be peaceful, safe and secure,” Kanja said.

The Inspector General emphasised that the National Police Service is committed to maintaining law and order during the rally, which is expected to draw large crowds.

He noted that security arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety of participants and the general public.

Kanja’s remarks come amid growing concern over the presence of organised groups at public gatherings, with reports linking them to incidents of violence and disruption.

Security agencies have in recent months intensified efforts to curb such activities, including monitoring suspected organisers and enhancing intelligence gathering.

The assurance by the police chief is aimed at restoring public confidence ahead of the Kisumu event, as authorities seek to prevent any form of unrest.

He reiterated that individuals found engaging in unlawful activities would face the full force of the law.

Security officers are expected to be deployed across key areas in Kisumu to manage crowds, control movement, and respond swiftly to any incidents.

The police have also called on organisers and attendees to cooperate with law enforcement officers and adhere to guidelines issued for public gatherings.

The Linda Mwananchi rally is part of a series of political events that have been taking place in different parts of the country.

Such gatherings have occasionally attracted attention due to security concerns, particularly where tensions are high.

Kanja said the police are working closely with event organisers and other stakeholders to ensure that the rally proceeds without disruption.

He added that proactive measures, including surveillance and coordination with local authorities, have been implemented to enhance security.
