The United Opposition leaders yesterday said they are ready to set aside their personal ambitions and rally behind one candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
This follows the official nomination of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as his party’s presidential candidate.
Kalonzo’s nomination has triggered intense negotiations among opposition leaders over who will carry the coalition’s flag to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.
At yesterday’s meeting held at Uhuru Park, Kalonzo presented himself not just as a consensus candidate, but as a choice representing values and policies opposed to what he called “a regime that has lost its soul.”
He described the dire situation in the country under President Ruto, citing high taxes, rising public debt, and a culture of impunity undermining national institutions.
“Education, which was once a gateway to opportunity, has become a burden. Parents are drowning in debt, teachers are demoralized, and students are uncertain about their future. A government that does this to its children’s education has lost its moral compass,” he said.
Kalonzo accused the Ruto administration of weaponizing public institutions, capturing Parliament, intimidating the media, and attempting to undermine judicial independence.
Speeches from other leaders also reflected a strong sense of unity, with many promising to support whichever candidate the opposition coalition selects.
Matiang’i acknowledged internal opposition disputes but said those differences reflect creative engagement, not hostility.
“We will put aside personal interests to save the country. If the coalition settles on Kalonzo Musyoka, we will support him. We will remain united.”
Rigathi Gachagua energized the crowd with a mix of seriousness and humor:
“We will have one leader to face Kasongo (Ruto). If Kalonzo is chosen, my one million supporters and I will back him. I will campaign for him.”
