President William Ruto on Wednesday, February 25, held talks with Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh at State House Nairobi, where the two leaders discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between Kenya and the United Kingdom.

The meeting was part of ongoing engagements under the UK–Kenya Strategic Partnership, which guides collaboration between the two countries in areas such as trade, security, education, and governance.

However, this particular discussion placed strong emphasis on advancing women’s empowerment.

According to a statement released by the British High Commission Nairobi, the talks centered on promoting the role of women in peacebuilding and stability.

The two leaders also explored ways to support women in leadership positions across political, social, and economic sectors.

“The Duchess of Edinburgh and President William Ruto met today and discussed the continued collaboration under the UK–Kenya Strategic Partnership, focusing on women building peace & stability and women's role as leaders,” the High Commission said in its statement.

During the meeting, President Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to expanding opportunities for women and ensuring they play a greater role in decision-making processes.

He noted that women continue to contribute significantly to community development, economic growth, and conflict resolution, and should therefore be fully included in leadership spaces.

The Duchess of Edinburgh, who has been actively involved in championing women’s rights and gender equality, expressed support for initiatives aimed at empowering women and girls.

She emphasized the importance of partnerships that create lasting impact, especially in areas where women are underrepresented.
