Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Roselyn Akombe has sparked fresh political discussion in the country after making remarks that many believe were aimed at Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Her comments came barely a day after the senator held a large and energetic rally in Kitengela, where he attracted huge crowds and strong public attention.

Taking to her official account on X on Monday, February 16, 2026, Akombe shared a message that many Kenyans quickly linked to the rising popularity of certain political figures.

Although she did not mention any leaderby name, her words stirred strong reactions online and among political observers.

In her message, Akombe warned citizens to be cautious about politicians who suddenly appear as champions of the people.

She described a pattern where some leaders are built up and presented as brave fighters against those in power, only to later join forces with the same leaders they once criticised.

Akombe wrote that Kenyans often fall into what she described as a political trick. She explained that some leaders are carefully positioned to look like heroes.

According to her, such leaders are sometimes shown facing police action, including tear gas, which helps build public sympathy and support.

She added that Kenyans, who enjoy political drama, are easily convinced that such leaders are genuinely fighting for the public interest.

She went on to say that after gaining public trust and attention, these leaders sometimes change their stand.

Akombe claimed that many of them eventually sit at the same negotiation tables with the very authorities they were opposing earlier.

Her message suggested that the cycle repeats itself in Kenyan politics and that voters should learn to recognise the pattern.

Her remarks came at a time when Senator Sifuna’s political influence appears to be growing.

The Kitengela rally drew thousands of supporters, showing his strong appeal, especially among young voters.

During the rally, Sifuna delivered strong speeches criticising government policies and promising to defend the interests of ordinary Kenyans.

His bold tone and confident public appearances have helped raise his profile nationally.

Supporters of Sifuna have defended him, saying he is a firm and consistent leader who is speaking on issues affecting citizens.

Many of them dismissed Akombe’s remarks as general political advice rather than a direct attack.

Others, however, believe her statement was a clear warning about politicians who gain popularity quickly.

Political analysts say Akombe’s comments have reopened an old debate in Kenya about trust and loyalty in leadership.

They note that Kenyan politics has previously seen leaders who began as strong government critics but later formed alliances with ruling powers.

Akombe, who previously served at the electoral commission and later left the country citing safety concerns, has continued to comment on political matters from time to time.

Her opinions often attract attention because of her past role in overseeing elections.
