He stressed that the agreement does not involve transferring functions from the county government to the national government, but rather aims to support service delivery in areas that have faced serious challenges for a long time.
Addressing concerns from leaders and residents, the President made it clear that he has no intention of running the city.
He said his office already carries many national responsibilities and that taking over county duties is not part of his plans.
However, he explained that as Head of State, he has a responsibility to ensure that citizens receive proper services, especially in the capital city which serves as the country’s main economic and administrative centre.
The President noted that the agreement targets four major areas that directly affect the daily lives of Nairobi residents.
These areas include water supply, road infrastructure, housing development, and solid waste management.
According to him, improving these sectors will help address the growing demands of the city’s increasing population and support economic growth.
On water services, the President acknowledged that many residents still face water shortages and unreliable supply.
He said the agreement will support efforts to expand water infrastructure, improve distribution systems, and ensure that more households and businesses have access to clean and reliable water.
Regarding roads, the President explained that traffic congestion and poor road conditions have continued to slow economic activities in the city.
He said the cooperation agreement will support the construction and repair of roads to improve transport and reduce travel time for residents and businesses.
The housing sector is another key focus of the agreement. The President said the government plans to increase affordable housing projects to help address the shortage of decent and affordable homes.
He explained that expanding housing opportunities will not only improve living conditions but also create job opportunities for many young people working in construction and related industries.
The President also highlighted solid waste management as a major challenge facing the city.
He said the agreement will help improve garbage collection, disposal systems, and environmental management.
Part of the plan includes the restoration of the Nairobi River, which has faced pollution and environmental degradation for many years.
He said restoring the river will improve the city’s environment and public health.
