Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has officially authorised the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) to support local administrators in maintaining security and enforcing government policies across the country.

The move is aimed at strengthening coordination between police officers and grassroots administrators such as chiefs and assistant chiefs.

In a recent gazette notice, IG Kanja outlined the expanded role of NGAPU officers, stating that they will work closely with national government administrators to enhance law enforcement, public order, and security during public events.

The directive is expected to improve the ability of local leaders to carry out their duties effectively, especially in areas that require quick response to security concerns.

According to the notice, NGAPU officers will now assist chiefs and assistant chiefs in enforcing government policies at the community level.

Chiefs and their assistants play an important role in connecting the government with citizens, particularly in rural and urban settlements.

However, many of them have faced challenges when handling security matters due to limited resources and personnel.

The involvement of NGAPU is expected to address these challenges by providing additional support and professional policing services.

IG Kanja explained that public safety remains a key priority for the National Police Service. He noted that the presence of NGAPU officers will help ensure that government programmes and policies are implemented smoothly and safely.

He added that the collaboration between police and administrators will also help address rising concerns about law and order during community gatherings and government-related activities.

The directive also allows NGAPU officers to provide security during public functions organised by both government and community leaders.

Such events often attract large crowds, making them vulnerable to security threats or disruptions.

By assigning NGAPU officers to these functions, the police leadership hopes to improve crowd control, protect participants, and prevent criminal activities.

Security experts have described the move as a step toward improving coordination between different government departments responsible for maintaining law and order.

They believe that involving trained police officers in local administrative duties can help ensure faster response to conflicts, disputes, and emergencies within communities.

The cooperation is also expected to strengthen communication between the National Police Service and grassroots administrators.

Local administrators have welcomed the decision, saying it will make their work easier and safer.

Chiefs and assistant chiefs often handle sensitive issues such as land disputes, domestic conflicts, and enforcement of government regulations.

With additional police support, they believe they will be better equipped to manage such responsibilities while ensuring the safety of residents.

However, some observers have urged the government to ensure that the expanded role of NGAPU officers is implemented responsibly.

They emphasised the importance of respecting human rights and maintaining professionalism while enforcing government policies and managing public gatherings.

They also called for clear guidelines to prevent misuse of power and to ensure accountability among officers deployed to assist local administrators.
