Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken out strongly in defence of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, saying he will not sit back and watch him face intimidation or political pressure.

Gachagua stated that as a senior political leader from the Mt Kenya region, he feels obligated to stand up for Uhuru and protect his right to freely engage in national matters.

While addressing residents during a public gathering, Gachagua stressed that Kenya’s Constitution gives every citizen, including retired leaders, the freedom to associate with anyone and take part in political discussions.

He said Uhuru Kenyatta should not be targeted or restricted simply because of his past leadership position or current political choices.

Gachagua told supporters, “I will not allow Uhuru Kenyatta to be intimidated. It is my responsibility as a leader from the Mt Kenya region to defend our son. He must be allowed to enjoy his constitutional freedom.

If he wants to work with Gachagua, why not?” His remarks quickly attracted attention and sparked debate among political leaders and members of the public.

The former Deputy President described Uhuru as a leader who served the country for many years and deserves respect even after leaving office.

He said that former presidents in democratic societies are often allowed to contribute to national conversations and support leaders or causes they believe in without interference.

Gachagua also argued that political cooperation should not be viewed as unusual or suspicious.

He said leaders often come together to discuss development, governance, and national unity, and such engagements should be encouraged rather than criticised.

According to him, building partnerships across political lines can strengthen leadership and benefit citizens.

He further emphasised that leaders from the Mt Kenya region must support one another in order to protect the region’s interests and maintain unity.

Gachagua said the region has played an important role in shaping Kenya’s political history, and its leaders should work together instead of allowing divisions to weaken their influence.

His statement comes at a time when Kenya’s political environment is experiencing constant changes, with leaders forming new alliances and reviewing old partnerships.

Discussions about Uhuru Kenyatta’s political position after leaving office have remained a topic of public interest, especially among supporters and political analysts.

Some leaders have supported Gachagua’s remarks, saying he is promoting democratic values by defending Uhuru’s right to political freedom.

They believe that every Kenyan, regardless of status, should be allowed to express opinions and associate with others without fear.

However, others have expressed concern that such statements may increase political tension, especially within regions where competition for influence is high.

They argue that leaders should focus on unity and development rather than engaging in public political disagreements.

Political observers say Gachagua’s comments reflect the growing importance of regional leadership and influence in national politics.

They note that leaders often speak strongly to assure their supporters that they are protecting their interests and promoting unity within their communities.
