Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has strongly criticized recent arrests and what they described as excessive use of force by security agencies, calling for urgent investigations and punishment of those found responsible.

The bishops raised concern over reports that some of the incidents have taken place in religious spaces, including churches, which they say should remain safe and respected places of worship.

In a public statement, the bishops expressed deep concern over what they described as increasing cases of law enforcement officers using force in ways that threaten public safety and undermine citizens’ rights.

They said that while security agencies have a duty to maintain law and order, this responsibility must be carried out within the limits of the law and with respect for human dignity.

The bishops condemned cases where individuals were reportedly arrested in places of worship, saying such actions create fear among believers and weaken trust between citizens and law enforcement agencies.

They stressed that churches are sacred spaces where people seek spiritual guidance, comfort, and peace, and should not be turned into scenes of confrontation.

Church leaders also called for independent and transparent investigations into all incidents involving alleged police brutality.

They insisted that officers who misuse their authority must be held accountable through legal processes.

According to the bishops, failure to take action against wrongdoing risks encouraging further violations and eroding public confidence in security institutions.

The bishops further emphasized that the protection of human rights is a fundamental principle in Kenya and should guide the actions of all government institutions.

They said that citizens must feel safe when interacting with law enforcement officers and should not fear harassment or violence while exercising their constitutional freedoms.

In their statement, the church leaders urged security agencies to adopt peaceful and professional methods when handling public gatherings, protests, and law enforcement operations.

They noted that dialogue and community engagement often help resolve conflicts without the need for force.

The bishops encouraged authorities to invest in training officers on human rights, conflict resolution, and respectful engagement with the public.

The church also appealed to government leaders to ensure that investigations into alleged abuse of power are handled fairly and without political interference.

They stressed that justice must be seen to be done to restore public confidence in state institutions.

According to the bishops, accountability is necessary not only to punish wrongdoing but also to prevent future violations.

At the same time, the bishops called on citizens to remain peaceful and respect the law, urging communities to avoid confrontations with security officers.

They encouraged Kenyans to use legal channels to express grievances and seek justice.
