Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has dismissed claims that his recent meeting with President William Ruto was meant to transfer some county government responsibilities to the national government.

The governor clarified that the meeting focused on development and improving service delivery in the capital city, not taking away powers from the county administration.

Speculation had grown after Sakaja was seen holding talks with President Ruto, with some leaders and members of the public suggesting that the discussions could lead to certain county roles being managed by the national government.

The rumours quickly spread on social media and in political circles, raising concerns about the independence of the county government.

However, Sakaja strongly denied the claims, insisting that Nairobi County remains fully in charge of its constitutional responsibilities.

He explained that the meeting with the President was part of normal cooperation between the two levels of government.

According to the governor, such discussions are necessary to ensure that development projects in Nairobi are completed smoothly and efficiently.

Sakaja said Nairobi, being the capital city, requires strong collaboration between the national and county governments because many projects affect both administrations.

He noted that issues such as infrastructure, housing, transport, and security often require joint planning and support from both levels of leadership.

The governor stressed that working together does not mean surrendering county powers but rather strengthening service delivery to residents.

The governor further explained that the Constitution clearly outlines the roles of both the national and county governments.

He assured Nairobi residents that his administration understands and respects those roles.

Sakaja said he remains committed to protecting the interests of city residents while also building partnerships that can help improve services.

He also criticised individuals spreading what he termed as misleading information, saying such claims only create unnecessary fear among Nairobi residents.

Sakaja urged the public to rely on verified information from official government communication channels instead of rumours circulating online.

During his remarks, the governor highlighted some of the areas where the county government is working closely with the national administration.

He mentioned ongoing infrastructure development, urban housing projects, and efforts to improve public transport as examples of projects that require support from both governments.

Sakaja said such cooperation is meant to speed up development and ensure that Nairobi continues to grow as a modern city.

Political observers have noted that cooperation between governors and the national government has sometimes attracted criticism, especially when people fear that devolution may be weakened.

However, supporters of Sakaja argue that working closely with the national leadership can help counties access more resources and technical support.

Some Nairobi residents have welcomed the governor’s clarification, saying they want leaders to focus on development rather than political disagreements.

Others, however, continue to call for transparency whenever discussions between the two levels of government take place to ensure that county powers are not affected.
