There was a tense moment in Siaya County on Tuesday after Governor James Orengo was interrupted by a section of residents while speaking at a public event attended by President William Ruto.

The incident happened during a high-profile visit by the President, who had toured the region to preside over the groundbreaking ceremony of the Usenge Beach Pier.

The project is expected to play a key role in opening up economic opportunities around Lake Victoria and improving the lives of communities that depend on fishing and trade.

Hundreds of residents had gathered at the venue to witness the launch, alongside several local leaders and government officials.

The atmosphere was lively as people waited to hear from their leaders about the development plans for the area.

While addressing the crowd, President Ruto said he had come with leaders from the region and wanted them to speak directly to the people. He invited Governor Orengo to be the first to address the gathering.

However, shortly after Orengo began speaking, sections of the crowd started shouting and interrupting him.

The noise quickly grew louder, making it difficult for him to continue with his speech. The heckling forced the governor to cut his remarks short.

“I ask you to come to Siaya again,” Orengo said briefly before handing back the microphone.

His statement was drowned by continued jeers from parts of the audience, creating a moment of confusion at the event.

Despite the disruption, President Ruto moved on with the programme and continued to address the gathering.

He shifted focus to the main purpose of his visit, which was to launch the Usenge Beach Pier project and outline its expected benefits.

The President explained that the project is part of a wider plan by the government to grow the country’s blue economy.

He said improving infrastructure along Lake Victoria will help fishermen reduce losses, access better markets, and increase their earnings.

Ruto also noted that the new pier would support trade in the region by making it easier to transport goods across the lake.

He added that such projects are meant to bring long-term benefits to local communities and create more job opportunities.

Local leaders who spoke after the incident called for calm and urged residents to allow leaders to express their views without interruption.

They emphasized the importance of unity, especially during events meant to promote development.

The disruption involving Governor Orengo has since sparked discussion among political observers, with some linking it to ongoing political tensions in the region.

Others have called for respectful engagement between leaders and the public, even when there are differences in opinion.
