He said the party earned respect across the country because it stood firmly with citizens during difficult political moments and fought for reforms.
“ODM used to be the party that fought for the people,” Sifuna said. “But what we are seeing today is something very different.
The party is now almost unrecognizable compared to the one many of us joined years ago.”
Sifuna blamed the changes on the growing political relationship between ODM leaders and members of the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
He argued that the cooperation between the two sides has confused supporters and weakened the identity of ODM as an opposition party.
The Nairobi senator also addressed claims that there is a formal agreement binding the two political parties together. He insisted that no such valid agreement currently exists.
“There is no document binding ODM to UDA,” Sifuna said. “Any arrangement that people are talking about already expired. What they are calling an extension is illegal and has no basis.”
He maintained that ODM supporters expected the party to remain a strong voice for accountability and to challenge the government whenever necessary.
However, he said many loyal supporters now feel disappointed and uncertain about the party’s direction.
Sifuna further suggested that the situation has personally affected Raila Odinga, who has led the party for many years.
According to the senator, the veteran opposition leader feels that the party’s original vision has been undermined.
“Raila will never forgive Ruto for what he has done to ODM,” Sifuna said.
