Quiet village in Maweni, Malindi Constituency, is in mourning after a tragic accident claimed the lives of a mother and her child on Friday.

The two died after an electric pole suddenly collapsed onto their home, leaving residents shocked and heartbroken.

The incident happened during the day while the mother, who is said to have had seven children, was going about her normal household duties.

According to neighbours, there was no warning before the pole came crashing down, destroying part of the house and trapping those inside.

Sadly, the woman and one of her children did not survive the impact.

Another child from the same family was injured in the accident and was quickly rushed to Malindi Sub-County Hospital.

Medical staff are currently attending to the child, and efforts are being made to ensure recovery.

The bodies of the mother and her child were later taken to the mortuary at Malindi Hospital.

Family members and local leaders have said that burial arrangements will be carried out according to Islamic traditions, as the family prepares to lay their loved ones to rest.

Residents in Maweni say the tragedy could have been avoided. Many have pointed fingers at Kenya Power and Lighting Company, accusing the company of failing to act despite repeated complaints about weak and unsafe electric poles in the area.

Locals claim that they had raised concerns several times, warning that some of the poles were old, damaged, and at risk of falling.

They say their calls for repairs or replacements were not taken seriously, leaving the community exposed to danger.

“This has been a problem for a long time,” one resident said. “We kept asking for help, but nothing was done. Now we have lost lives.”

The accident has sparked anger and frustration among villagers, who are now demanding immediate action.

They want all risky power lines and poles in the area inspected and fixed before another tragedy occurs.

Community leaders have also stepped in, urging authorities to investigate the incident and hold those responsible accountable.

They say it is important for utility companies to respond quickly to safety concerns raised by the public.
