The lorry first crashed into a perimeter wall before ploughing into a shop within the trading centre.
The impact was severe, destroying part of the structure and trapping some of the victims inside.
Residents and bystanders quickly rushed to the scene to help pull out those who had been caught in the wreckage.
Emergency responders later arrived and took over the rescue efforts. Sadly, two people were confirmed dead at the scene, while three others who sustained injuries were rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention.
Caleb Opondi, the County Executive Committee member for Public Health and Medical Services, confirmed the incident.
He said the bodies of the deceased were taken to the county referral hospital morgue, while the injured were admitted to the emergency care unit for treatment.
This latest accident adds to a growing list of tragedies at the same location.
Residents say this is the sixth accident recorded at Kawa Shopping Centre since the bypass near the area was opened for use.
In total, at least eight people have lost their lives in previous incidents, making the junction one of the most feared black spots in Migori County.
Locals blame the rising number of accidents on speeding vehicles, especially heavy commercial trucks that pass through the area.
They say drivers often fail to slow down when approaching the junction, putting the lives of pedestrians and traders at risk.
The situation is said to be worse during the rainy season, when roads become slippery and visibility is reduced.
Under such conditions, vehicles can easily lose control, particularly when carrying heavy loads like bricks.
Leaders and residents are now calling for urgent measures to improve safety at the junction.
Some have suggested the installation of speed bumps, proper road signage, and stricter enforcement of traffic rules to prevent further loss of life.
