Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has nominated Danish Otieno Onyango to serve as the county’s new deputy governor following the resignation of Joseph Oyugi Magwanga in late February.

In a statement issued on March 16, Governor Wanga announced the nomination, saying the move was in line with the law governing county governments and aimed at ensuring the smooth running of county operations.

The nomination now awaits approval by the Homa Bay County Assembly before Onyango can formally take up the new role.

Onyango is currently serving as the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Roads and Public Works, a position he has held while overseeing infrastructure development across the county.

Governor Wanga said he will continue to serve in that capacity even as he prepares to take on additional responsibilities as deputy governor once the assembly approves his nomination.

“Pursuant to a vacancy in the office of the deputy governor in Homa Bay following the resignation by the previous holder, and in compliance with the County Government Act, I do hereby nominate Danish Otieno Onyango to serve as the deputy governor, subject to approval by the county assembly,” Wanga said in the statement.

The position of deputy governor fell vacant after Joseph Oyugi Magwanga stepped down from the role toward the end of February.

His resignation created a leadership gap within the county government, prompting the governor to begin the process of identifying a suitable replacement.

Governor Wanga expressed confidence in Onyango’s ability to serve in the new role, pointing to his experience in public service and his involvement in key development projects within the county.

During his time in the Roads and Public Works docket, Onyango has been involved in supervising road construction, maintenance of county infrastructure and implementation of development projects aimed at improving connectivity in various parts of Homa Bay.

County officials say his work has contributed to efforts to improve transport and access to markets, schools and health facilities.

If approved by the county assembly, Onyango will work closely with Governor Wanga in overseeing county programs, coordinating development activities and supporting the implementation of government policies.

The deputy governor also plays a key role in representing the governor in official functions, assisting in the management of county departments and ensuring that service delivery continues smoothly.

The nomination now shifts attention to the Homa Bay County Assembly, whose members are expected to review Onyango’s credentials before deciding whether to approve his appointment.

The assembly may also conduct a vetting process to determine whether he is suitable for the position.

Leaders and residents across the county are closely watching the process, hoping that the transition will strengthen leadership and ensure continuity in county programs.
