Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has weighed in on the ongoing investigations and reported arrests of senior officials in the energy sector over the alleged fuel shortage scandal, questioning the motives behind the actions.

The officials at the centre of the probe include Kenya Pipeline Company Managing Director Joe Sang, Principal Secretary Mohamed Liban and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) Director-General.

They are under investigation over claims that their actions may have contributed to disruptions in the country’s fuel supply.

Reacting to the developments, Nyoro suggested that the arrests may not be driven by public interest, but rather internal power struggles within the sector.

“It has very little to do with the welfare of Kenyans, and it has everything to do with 'watu wadogo wamekula chakula ya mzee',” Nyoro said.

His remarks point to a view that the crackdown could be linked to conflicts over access to resources or influence, rather than efforts to address concerns affecting consumers.

The alleged fuel shortage had raised alarm across the country, with motorists and businesses reporting difficulties in accessing petroleum products in recent days.

Some fuel stations experienced supply gaps, while others reported delays in deliveries, leading to concerns over the stability of the supply chain.

Authorities have since launched investigations to establish the cause of the disruption, with a focus on possible mismanagement, interference or irregularities within the distribution system.

The outcome of the probe is expected to determine whether the shortage was genuine or artificially created.

Nyoro’s comments add a political dimension to the unfolding situation, highlighting differing perspectives on how the matter is being handled.

While some leaders have called for accountability and swift action against those found responsible, others have questioned whether the process is being influenced by factors unrelated to public welfare.

The energy sector remains a critical pillar of the country’s economy, and any disruptions in fuel supply can have wide-ranging effects on transport, trade and daily activities.

Ensuring a steady and reliable supply of fuel is therefore essential for both economic stability and public confidence.

As investigations continue, stakeholders are calling for transparency and fairness in handling the matter.

Observers note that clear communication from authorities will be key in addressing public concerns and preventing further uncertainty in the market.

The officials named in the investigations have not publicly responded to the allegations, and it remains unclear what specific charges, if any, may be brought against them.
