Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced that Nyali MP Mohamed Ali will receive a direct ticket from the United Opposition to contest the Mombasa gubernatorial seat in the 2027 polls.

Speaking during a rally in Mombasa on Saturday, Kalonzo said the decision had been reached in consultation with other opposition leaders, positioning Mohamed Ali, popularly known as Jicho Pevu, as their preferred candidate for the county’s top seat.

Kalonzo indicated that the move reflects a united front among opposition leaders as they begin early preparations for the 2027 General Election.

He expressed confidence in Mohamed Ali’s leadership and track record, describing him as a candidate capable of addressing key issues affecting residents of Mombasa.

The announcement signals growing coordination within opposition ranks, with leaders seeking to consolidate support ahead of the next election cycle.

By fronting Mohamed Ali as a joint candidate, the coalition appears to be aiming for a unified strategy in key political battlegrounds.

Mohamed Ali, a former investigative journalist, has built a reputation around exposing corruption and governance challenges, a background that Kalonzo referenced in his endorsement.

The WPF leader suggested that Ali’s experience aligns with the expectations of voters seeking accountability and effective leadership.

The rally in Mombasa attracted supporters from different parts of the county, reflecting early mobilisation efforts by opposition figures.

Kalonzo’s remarks were received with enthusiasm from the crowd, signalling support for the proposed candidature.

Political observers note that the early declaration of a preferred candidate could shape the dynamics of the Mombasa gubernatorial race, particularly as other parties begin to position their contenders.

The coastal county remains a key political stronghold, often drawing significant interest during election periods.

Kalonzo’s statement also underscores ongoing efforts by opposition leaders to present a united front, with mentions of key figures involved in the consultations.

The approach suggests an attempt to avoid internal competition and strengthen their chances in the polls.
