Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has challenged former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying he would support his presidential ambitions in the 2027 General Election if he successfully secures a place on the ballot.

In a brief statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Kuria appeared to question Gachagua’s political prospects while also expressing willingness to back him should he overcome the legal and political obstacles surrounding his future.

“I will vote for Riggy G if he proves me wrong and ends up on the ballot. Challenge given,” Kuria posted.

The remarks have quickly drawn attention within political circles, coming at a time when debate continues over Gachagua’s political future following his dramatic fallout with sections of the Kenya Kwanza administration that culminated in his impeachment in 2024.

Since leaving office, Gachagua has remained active in national politics, frequently engaging his supporters and criticising leaders within the government he once served.

His impeachment triggered deep political divisions, particularly within the Mt Kenya region, where he has continued to maintain influence among sections of the electorate.

The former deputy president is currently involved in ongoing court proceedings related to his impeachment, with the outcome expected to play a major role in determining his eligibility for future political contests, including a possible presidential bid in 2027.

Kuria’s latest comments are being interpreted by political observers as part of the shifting alliances and political positioning already taking shape ahead of the next General Election.

Although the statement was short, it carried strong political undertones, reflecting the increasingly competitive environment among leaders seeking influence in the Mt Kenya political landscape.

Kuria and Gachagua were once seen as close allies within the Kenya Kwanza coalition during the run-up to the 2022 General Election.

However, differences later emerged as political tensions within the ruling alliance became more visible.

The former Cabinet Secretary has in recent months maintained a relatively independent political stance, occasionally making public comments that have sparked debate about his future political direction.
