The National Economic Development Party (NEDP), associated with former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, has suspended its Secretary General Ben Mulwa over allegations of misconduct and appointed Ochali Oyeyo as the acting Secretary General.

The party announced the decision following internal deliberations, stating that the suspension takes immediate effect pending further internal processes and investigations into the allegations raised against Mulwa.

According to party sources, the decision was made in line with internal disciplinary procedures aimed at maintaining order, accountability, and integrity within the party’s leadership structure.

However, specific details of the alleged misconduct were not immediately disclosed.

In the interim arrangement, Ochali Oyeyo has been appointed to serve as acting Secretary General.

The party leadership said the appointment is meant to ensure continuity in party operations and administrative functions as the disciplinary process against Mulwa proceeds.

The leadership change marks a significant development within NEDP’s internal structure, coming at a time when the party has been working to strengthen its grassroots presence and consolidate its political base.

Ben Mulwa, who has been serving as Secretary General, has not yet issued a public statement in response to the suspension.

It remains unclear whether he will challenge the decision or cooperate with the internal disciplinary process.

Party officials, however, maintained that the suspension should not be interpreted as a conclusion of guilt, but rather as a procedural step to allow for a fair and orderly review of the allegations.

The announcement has already sparked interest among political observers, given NEDP’s growing visibility in the country’s political landscape and its association with Sonko, a prominent political figure known for his outspoken style and strong grassroots following.

Supporters of the party have expressed mixed reactions, with some calling for transparency in the handling of the matter, while others have urged members to remain calm and allow internal mechanisms to address the issue.

The appointment of Ochali Oyeyo as acting Secretary General is expected to stabilize the party’s administrative operations during the transition period.

He is now tasked with overseeing daily party functions, coordination, and communication as the leadership review continues.

NEDP leadership emphasized that the party remains committed to its core values and will continue to uphold discipline and accountability among its officials.

They also reiterated that internal structures are in place to ensure that any grievances or disputes are handled fairly and within established party guidelines.
