The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather forecast indicating continued rainfall across several parts of the country, with some regions expected to experience heavy downpours during the first half of the forecast period.

According to the latest outlook, rainfall will persist in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, parts of the Coast region and Northwestern Kenya.

The department further warned that some areas within the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and the Rift Valley are likely to experience particularly heavy rainfall events in the coming days.

However, the forecast indicates that the intensity of the rains is expected to gradually reduce from May 15, 2026, offering some relief to affected regions.

The update comes at a time when many parts of the country are already experiencing sustained rainfall, which has disrupted daily activities and raised concerns over flooding, transport challenges and safety risks in vulnerable areas.

In recent weeks, heavy rains have led to waterlogging in urban centres, reduced visibility on major roads and increased the risk of landslides in hilly and highland regions.

Authorities have been closely monitoring the situation as water levels continue to rise in some river basins.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged members of the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions during the rainy season. Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement during periods of heavy rainfall.

Motorists and pedestrians were specifically cautioned against attempting to cross flowing water, whether on foot or by vehicle, due to the risk of drowning or being swept away by strong currents.

Authorities also emphasized the importance of heeding early warning advisories and weather updates issued through official channels to ensure public safety.

Local disaster management agencies have been placed on alert in several counties, particularly those that have previously experienced flooding during prolonged rainy seasons.

Farmers have also been advised to take advantage of the rains where possible while remaining cautious of excessive rainfall that could damage crops or lead to soil erosion.
