President William Ruto joined other top leaders on Thursday for the national Labour Day celebrations held at Chavakali High School in Vihiga County.

The event brought together government officials, labour leaders and workers from different sectors to mark the annual day dedicated to recognising the contribution of workers to the country’s development.

Among the key leaders present were Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Francis Atwoli, who represents workers under the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU).

The celebrations featured speeches highlighting the role of workers in driving economic growth, improving service delivery and supporting national development goals.

Leaders used the occasion to reflect on labour issues affecting Kenyans, including employment opportunities, workplace conditions and ongoing efforts to improve worker welfare across various sectors.

President Ruto, alongside other speakers, was expected to address key government initiatives aimed at improving job creation and strengthening labour relations between employers and employees.

Labour Day, observed annually on May 1, is a public holiday that honours the contribution of workers in building the nation.

It also provides a platform for dialogue between government officials, employers and trade union representatives.

The choice of Chavakali High School as the venue brought national attention to Vihiga County, which hosted hundreds of attendees including workers from both the formal and informal sectors.

Security was heightened at the venue as early morning crowds gathered to participate in the celebrations.

Local residents also turned up in large numbers to witness the national event being held in their county.

COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, a long-serving labour leader, was among those expected to present workers’ concerns during the event, including issues related to wages, working conditions and social protection.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi also joined the President in the celebrations, reinforcing the government’s message of collaboration in addressing labour-related challenges.

The event comes at a time when the government is under pressure to create more employment opportunities for the growing youth population and to address concerns over the rising cost of living.
