A section of leaders within the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has intensified pressure on the party’s Secretary General Hassan Omar, demanding his resignation over remarks that have sparked accusations of ethnic profiling against the Kikuyu community.

The leaders, who addressed the media on Wednesday, gave Omar a 48-hour ultimatum to step down from his position, insisting that his apology was insufficient to address the concerns raised by his statements.

Among those leading the calls was Kagiri, who said the party official must take responsibility for the controversy and leave office immediately.

“We have given Hassan 48 hours to resign as UDA SG,” Kagiri stated.

Another leader, Nganga, dismissed Omar’s apology and maintained that resignation was the only acceptable course of action.

“No to his apology, he must resign in 48 hours,” Nganga said.

The controversy emerged after Omar was accused of allegedly making remarks perceived to be profiling members of the Kikuyu community, triggering criticism from political leaders and sections of the public.

Although Omar later issued an apology over the matter, some UDA members argued that the remarks had already caused political and ethnic tension, making his continued stay in office untenable.

The issue has exposed growing divisions within sections of the ruling party, with some leaders defending Omar while others insist disciplinary action must be taken to protect party unity and national cohesion.

Critics of the Secretary General argue that leaders occupying senior political offices should exercise caution in public communication, especially on matters touching on ethnicity and national identity.

They further warned that divisive political statements risk undermining efforts to promote unity at a time when the country continues to grapple with political and economic challenges.

The leaders calling for Omar’s resignation also urged the party leadership to take a firm stand against statements that could fuel ethnic tensions or political mistrust among communities.

So far, the UDA leadership has not issued an official position regarding the demands for Omar’s resignation or whether disciplinary action will be taken against him.

Political analysts say the dispute could place additional pressure on the ruling coalition as it seeks to maintain internal unity while navigating heightened political tensions across the country.
