President William Ruto has defended his frequent international travels, saying his overseas engagements are part of his responsibility as Kenya’s chief diplomat and are aimed at advancing the country’s interests on the global stage.

Speaking amid continued public debate over the number of foreign trips undertaken by his administration, the President dismissed claims that his travels are unnecessary, insisting that they are directly linked to securing opportunities and strengthening Kenya’s position internationally.

“I have not come here as a tourist or to waste time. I am the chief diplomat of our country,” Ruto said, emphasizing that his visits abroad are guided by national interests rather than personal considerations.

The President argued that diplomacy remains a critical tool in attracting investment, opening new markets for Kenyan products, and building strategic partnerships that can contribute to economic growth and job creation.

According to Ruto, engagement with global leaders, investors, and development partners is essential in an increasingly interconnected world.

His remarks come at a time when sections of the public and political leaders have questioned the frequency and cost of foreign travel by government officials.

Critics have argued that the country faces pressing domestic challenges, including the high cost of living, unemployment, and fiscal pressures, which require greater attention at home.

However, Ruto maintained that international engagements have yielded tangible benefits for the country.

He pointed to investment commitments, trade agreements, and development partnerships secured through diplomatic efforts as evidence that the trips are producing results.

The President said Kenya cannot afford to isolate itself from global conversations on trade, climate change, technology, infrastructure, and security.

He noted that active participation in international forums provides opportunities for the country to influence policy discussions and secure support for key national priorities.

Ruto further stated that many of the opportunities currently being pursued by the government require direct engagement with foreign governments, multilateral institutions, and private sector investors.

He argued that such interactions are difficult to achieve without high-level diplomatic representation.

The Head of State also stressed that his administration remains focused on delivering its development agenda while simultaneously strengthening Kenya’s international relations.

He said the government’s efforts abroad are intended to complement domestic programs aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding economic opportunities.
