Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has sharply criticised the police after a disturbing incident at PCEA Kariobangi North Church on Sunday, November 30, 2025.

Teargas was fired inside the church during a thanksgiving service, causing panic among worshippers, including small children who had gathered to celebrate the recent by-election victory of David Warui.

The service was attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who had joined congregants in marking Warui’s win as the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) candidate in the November 27 Kariobangi North MCA by-election.

What was meant to be a peaceful and joyous occasion quickly turned chaotic when teargas filled the sanctuary, sending worshippers scattering for safety.

Witnesses reported children choking as the fumes spread through the church, while adults struggled to guide them outside.

The frightening scene drew condemnation from leaders across the political divide, with many describing the police action as unnecessary and disrespectful to a place of worship.

MP Amisi expressed deep outrage in a strongly worded statement posted on X on Sunday.

He said the police had crossed a moral line by unleashing teargas in a sacred space where families had gathered in peace.

According to him, such behaviour undermines the values that hold the country together and threatens the democratic freedoms that Kenyans fought hard to secure.

Amisi also raised concern about the emotional impact the incident may have on children who were present.

He warned that such traumatic experiences could leave lasting scars and questioned why the state would allow force to be used in an environment where innocent minors were assembling for worship.
