Former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has stirred fresh debate after telling young Kenyans not to blame themselves for delaying marriage, saying the real problem is the difficult economic situation they are living in.
Speaking during a public event, Gachagua said many youths today are choosing to remain single not because they lack responsibility, but because they simply do not have the means to start families.

According to him, most young people are struggling to find stable jobs, affordable housing, or reliable income to support long-term commitments.

He noted that many would like to marry, but the high cost of living and limited opportunities have made it almost impossible.

Gachagua said he understands their fears and frustrations, and urged them not to feel guilty for postponing marriage.

He assured the youth that their situation is not a failure on their part but a reflection of an economy that needs serious fixing.
Gachagua then made a bold promise: if he becomes president, he will make major changes to ensure that young people regain confidence in building families.

He said his focus would be on stabilising the economy, creating more jobs, and lowering the cost of essential services so that young people can afford to settle down.

According to him, with the right government policies, the pressure facing young people will ease, giving them room to think about marriage and family life.

Gachagua added that within one year of his leadership, young Kenyans would be able to marry comfortably because the environment would be more supportive.

He insisted that his aim is to restore hope among the youth and give them a fair chance at building their futures.
