Makau Mutua Questions Gachagua’s Claim That Kalonzo Has Surrendered Nairobi Politics

State House constitutional advisor Makau Mutua has stirred debate after reacting to claims made by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

According to Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has supposedly handed over the entire Nairobi political space to Embakasi East MP Babu Owino’s ally, Murima covering the governor seat, senator, woman representative, and even most MCA positions.

Mutua challenged this claim sharply, saying the picture painted by Gachagua shows the Akamba community giving away one of the country’s most important political battlegrounds without any resistance.

In his view, Nairobi is not just another county; it is a national centre of power where political groups should fight hard to maintain influence.

He questioned how such a huge political concession could happen “without firing a single shot,” not even a symbolic fight to defend political ground.

Mutua added that in Kenyan ethnic politics, no community can afford to give away its bargaining power.
For him, this alleged surrender raises deep questions about political strategy within the Kalonzo camp.

He insisted that a true “general” does not bow out quietly but faces the battle head-on, even when the odds are tough.

He also pointed out the irony in Gachagua’s comments. The former DP is claiming a big win for Murima even though, according to Mutua, the same Gachagua has struggled to deliver political victories in his own Mt. Kenya region.

Mutua suggests it is surprising that Kalonzo would hand Nairobi to a figure whose political weight in the Mountain has not been proven.
