The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced the appointment of Moses Ledama Sunkuli as the Acting Chief Executive Officer and Commission Secretary with immediate effect.

The announcement marks an important administrative change at the electoral body, which is responsible for managing elections and referendums in Kenya.

In a statement, the commission said Sunkuli will temporarily take over the leadership role as the agency continues to strengthen its operations and prepare for its future responsibilities.

The IEBC explained that the appointment is meant to ensure smooth running of the commission’s daily activities and maintain stability within the institution.

Sunkuli brings years of experience in public service and administration, which the commission believes will help in maintaining professionalism and efficiency.

Over time, he has served in various roles that involved governance, leadership, and policy development.

His background in public administration is expected to support the commission in handling its critical tasks, including managing election planning, voter registration, and coordination of electoral processes.

The role of the Chief Executive Officer and Commission Secretary is considered one of the most important positions at the IEBC.

The office is responsible for overseeing the implementation of commission decisions, supervising staff, managing resources, and ensuring that election operations are conducted according to the law.

The CEO also serves as the main link between the commission and external stakeholders such as government agencies, political parties, and the public.

The IEBC stated that Sunkuli’s appointment comes at a time when the commission is working to rebuild public confidence and strengthen internal systems.

In recent years, the electoral body has faced challenges including leadership changes, legal disputes, and calls for reforms aimed at improving transparency and accountability in election management.

Political observers say the appointment of an acting CEO is an important step in ensuring continuity of operations as the commission prepares for upcoming electoral activities.

They note that strong administrative leadership is necessary for effective planning and coordination, especially in a country where elections play a major role in shaping governance and democracy.

Some stakeholders have welcomed the appointment, expressing hope that Sunkuli’s leadership will promote unity and professionalism within the commission.

They believe stable leadership will help IEBC focus on improving voter confidence, strengthening electoral systems, and addressing past challenges that have affected public trust.

The commission also reassured Kenyans that it remains committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections.

IEBC officials said they will continue working closely with stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organisations, and government institutions, to ensure transparency in all electoral processes.
