Speaking during a public address, Karua made it clear that personal ambitions should not divide leaders who share the same goal of changing the country’s leadership.
“Kama United Opposition tumesema yule atakaye chaguliwa kati yetu ndiye tutafuata sote,” Karua said, meaning that once one person is chosen among them, all opposition leaders must rally behind that candidate.
Her statement was seen as a strong call for discipline, trust, and maturity within opposition politics.
Karua noted that one of the biggest weaknesses of past opposition efforts has been disunity.
She said that when leaders pull in different directions, the people lose confidence and the ruling side gains an advantage.
According to her, unity is not just about winning elections but also about giving Kenyans hope that there is an alternative leadership that is organised and focused.
She explained that the process of choosing one candidate must be open, fair, and agreed upon by all involved.
Whether through consensus, opinion polls, or another clear method, Karua said the most important thing is that everyone respects the final decision. “We cannot say we want change, yet we fight each other,” she added.
Karua also spoke about putting the interests of citizens first. She said opposition leaders must listen to the struggles of ordinary Kenyans, including the high cost of living, unemployment, and pressure on small businesses.
In her view, unity among leaders should be based on shared values and a clear plan to improve people’s lives, not just on politics.
The PLP leader challenged opposition figures to rise above ego and personal branding. She warned that voters are tired of leaders who agree in public but disagree in private.
According to Karua, Kenyans want honesty, sacrifice, and leaders who can work together even when they have different backgrounds and parties.
She further reminded opposition supporters that unity does not mean silence or blind agreement.
Leaders, she said, can still debate and share ideas, but once a decision is made, everyone must support it fully.
This, she believes, is the only way to build a strong and credible opposition.
