Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged families to consider having more children, warning that some communities risk declining if birth rates continue to drop.

Gachagua made the remarks while addressing residents in Jabini, Kinangop, on Saturday, where he also spoke about social challenges affecting young people, especially the spread of illegal alcohol.

While speaking to the crowd, Gachagua expressed concern about the return of illicit brews in the area.

He said illegal alcohol is once again destroying the lives of young people despite earlier efforts to stop the trade.

According to him, the problem had previously been controlled but has now resurfaced, putting many families at risk.

“Mimi niseme mambo ya pombe haramu nilikuwa nimemaliza hapa Kinangop. Pombe imerudi kuua watoto wetu,” Gachagua told residents.

He explained that illegal alcohol has continued to cause suffering by affecting the health and future of young people.

He urged community leaders and parents to work together to protect young people from the dangers linked to such drinks.

Gachagua said that apart from fighting illegal alcohol, communities must also think about their future by raising strong families.

He shifted his speech to encourage people to embrace having more children, saying population growth plays a role in keeping communities alive and strong.

“Jana nilikuwa uthoni Gatundu nikaomba jamii yetu. Ndio tuweze kupanga hii jamii isikwishe, mkubali mtuongeze watoto,” he told the crowd.

He explained that children play an important role in strengthening family ties and ensuring that traditions and culture are passed down to future generations.

The former deputy president stressed that families should not fear the responsibility of raising children. He said children bring joy, continuity, and hope to society.

According to him, communities that fail to encourage family growth may struggle to maintain their identity and strength in the future.

“Mimi naomba watoto, kwa sababu hii jamii itaisha. Watoto wetu hushinda kwa mitaro.

So our tribe, if we do not have kids, where will we end? Kids are gifts,” Gachagua said while encouraging families to see children as blessings rather than burdens.

He repeated his message by telling residents not to be afraid of expanding their families.

“Na mimi nimwambie msiongope kupata watoto,” he added, urging families to think positively about parenthood.

Gachagua also encouraged parents to guide and mentor their children properly so they can grow into responsible members of society.

He said raising children is not only about increasing numbers but also about building strong and disciplined future generations.

Community members who attended the meeting listened closely as Gachagua spoke about the connection between family stability and social development.

Some local leaders agreed that protecting young people from harmful habits such as alcohol abuse is necessary for community growth.
