He emphasized that no individual is bigger than the party and reminded the Secretary General that the party’s leadership and policies are determined through constitutional processes established in ODM’s governing documents.
“In recent months, the Secretary General has occasionally struggled to distinguish between his personal opinions and official Party policy as determined by our constitutionally mandated organs.
This has, understandably, created confusion among members and supporters,” Oburu said in the letter.
He expressed concern that Sifuna’s statements have created divisions and raised doubts among members about the party’s leadership structure.
Oburu stressed that internal disagreements are natural in political parties, but public statements that contradict party policy risk undermining unity and creating unnecessary tension.
Oburu’s response comes after Sifuna publicly questioned the legitimacy of his leadership and made claims about party decisions that Oburu described as misleading.
The party leader suggested that it is important for officials to separate personal viewpoints from formal party positions, warning that failing to do so could erode trust in the party’s decision-making processes.
Oburu reminded Sifuna that ODM has clear constitutional procedures for appointing leaders, making decisions, and resolving disputes.
He said these procedures must be respected to maintain order and credibility.
According to Oburu, any disagreements should be addressed within party structures rather than in public forums, which risk sending mixed messages to supporters and the electorate.
The letter also highlighted the importance of maintaining discipline and cohesion within the party, especially as ODM positions itself for upcoming elections.
Oburu said members must follow agreed-upon rules and respect decisions made by constitutionally recognized organs, ensuring that personal opinions do not overshadow party policy.
Political observers say the disagreement between Oburu and Sifuna reflects broader tensions within ODM’s leadership, particularly as the party navigates internal succession debates and prepares for future political contests.
While such debates are common in political organizations, public disagreements can sometimes damage a party’s image and unity.
