He noted that rising urban populations, economic growth, and increased activities within the city have created new security challenges that require specialised attention.
According to him, the creation of a dedicated police unit will help address these challenges more effectively.
In his directive, the President ordered the Interior Cabinet Secretary to develop and present a framework for the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit.
He gave Murkomen a period of 60 days to prepare the plan and submit it for review and implementation.
The President explained that the new police unit is expected to focus on enhancing coordination, improving response time to security threats, and ensuring better protection for residents, businesses, and visitors.
The President stressed that security is non-negotiable, especially for a city that plays a major role in the country’s economy and international relations.
He explained that investors, tourists, and businesses require a safe environment to operate successfully.
He added that improving security will also support economic activities and improve the quality of life for residents living and working in the city.
The planned police unit is expected to work closely with existing security agencies to ensure effective coordination.
The President indicated that the unit would focus on modern policing strategies, intelligence sharing, and improved surveillance systems to help prevent crime.
He also highlighted the importance of community cooperation, saying that citizens play a major role in maintaining security by working closely with law enforcement agencies.
The directive has sparked discussions among leaders and security experts, with many describing the move as an important step towards strengthening law enforcement in the capital.
Supporters believe that a specialised police unit could help address crimes such as organised criminal activities, urban insecurity, and traffic-related challenges that often affect daily operations in the city.
However, some observers have raised questions about how the new unit will operate alongside existing police structures and whether it will receive enough resources to function effectively.
Others have emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in its operations to ensure it serves the public without misuse of authority.
