“The Biggest Coup in Kenya’s Politics Happened Yesterday,” Says MCA Robert Alai

Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai has sparked fresh political debate after making strong claims about recent changes within Kenya’s opposition politics.

In his remarks, Alai described the latest developments in the Azimio coalition as the biggest political coup the country has seen in recent times.

His statements have drawn attention from political observers and supporters from different sides of the political divide.

According to Alai, one of the most surprising changes is the return of Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Democratic Movement to a leadership role within the Azimio coalition.

He pointed out that Wiper had earlier distanced itself from the coalition, making its sudden appearance in Azimio’s leadership structure unexpected.

Alai suggested that the move did not happen naturally but was carefully influenced by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He claimed that Uhuru is working strategically to strengthen the opposition and possibly shift Luo political support firmly into the opposition side.

Alai also expressed surprise that Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has openly supported the new Azimio leadership.

He noted that Muturi has never been officially associated with the coalition before, which, in Alai’s view, makes the situation even more unusual.

He argued that such political alignments could signal deeper planning and realignments taking place behind the scenes.

The MCA further criticized what he described as support from key Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders towards these changes.

He mentioned Winnie Odinga, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, and their allies, claiming they are backing Uhuru Kenyatta’s efforts to gain influence over ODM through the Azimio coalition.

Alai suggested that this could lead to a shift in how ODM is managed, especially if younger leaders gain more control over party operations.

In his remarks, Alai claimed that leaders such as Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino could eventually find themselves playing major roles in running ODM affairs through what he called an Azimio-driven political takeover.

He argued that these developments are also creating tension within ODM’s leadership structure.

Alai claimed that Sifuna does not fully recognize or respect Oburu Odinga’s leadership position within the party.

Despite these claims, Alai noted that Oburu Odinga appears to maintain a close and friendly relationship with Sifuna and his allies.

He described this relationship as a “soft spot,” suggesting that it could influence how internal party disagreements are handled.

Alai also used strong language when referring to Sifuna’s political allies, describing them as rebellious figures who are pushing for rapid changes within the party and coalition structures.
