Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Erastus Ethekon has opened up about the mixed reactions he and his team received when they took over leadership of the electoral body.

Speaking about the moment they assumed office, Ethekon said many Kenyans expressed uncertainty about the responsibility they had accepted, with some people fearing the task ahead while others offered prayers for their success.

Ethekon explained that when they were appointed to lead the IEBC, reactions from the public, political leaders, and stakeholders were varied.

He said some people approached them with concern, warning that the role they had accepted was extremely challenging.

According to him, these individuals believed the commission faced serious pressure and expectations, which made the job difficult and sensitive.

At the same time, Ethekon noted that others responded in a more emotional and supportive way.

He recalled how several people told them they would pray for them, explaining that they were unsure whether to celebrate the appointment or sympathise with the challenges that came with the position.

He said these reactions showed the level of trust and concern Kenyans have towards the electoral body, especially because elections play a crucial role in shaping the country’s leadership.

The IEBC chairperson said leading the commission is not just a normal administrative responsibility but a national duty that requires integrity, transparency, and strong leadership.

He explained that the commission is responsible for organising and supervising elections and referendums, which directly influence the country’s democracy.

Because of this, he acknowledged that public scrutiny is expected and even necessary.

Ethekon said the mixed reactions they received reminded him and his team about the heavy responsibility they carry.

He explained that such responses encouraged them to stay focused on delivering credible and transparent electoral processes.

He added that the support from those who promised to pray for them gave them emotional strength and motivation to carry out their duties with honesty and dedication.

He further noted that the IEBC has faced challenges in the past, including disputes, public criticism, and political tension.

Because of this history, Ethekon said it is understandable why many Kenyans felt uncertain when the new leadership team took over.

However, he expressed confidence that his team is committed to rebuilding public trust in the commission through professionalism and fairness.

The chairperson also stressed the importance of teamwork within the commission.

He said successful elections require cooperation among commissioners, staff members, political parties, and voters.

According to him, building strong relationships with stakeholders will help ensure that future elections are peaceful, transparent, and widely accepted by the public.
