Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin has raised concern over serious irregularities in the tagging of bodies at Nyamira County Referral Hospital, pointing to possible lapses in the management of the facility’s mortuary.

Speaking on the matter, Amin said preliminary findings indicate that some bodies were either wrongly tagged or lacked proper identification, raising questions about the accuracy and reliability of records maintained at the hospital.

He noted that the irregularities were uncovered during ongoing investigations, which were prompted by complaints from members of the public.

According to Amin, the situation could lead to distress for families seeking to identify and collect the remains of their loved ones.

“We have established that there are serious inconsistencies in the tagging of bodies at the mortuary,” Amin said, adding that the anomalies could not be ignored.

The DCI boss explained that proper tagging of bodies is a critical process in any mortuary, as it ensures accurate identification and prevents mix-ups.

He warned that any failure in this process undermines public trust and could have far-reaching consequences for affected families.

Amin further disclosed that investigators are working to determine whether the irregularities were a result of negligence, systemic failure, or deliberate malpractice by those responsible for handling the bodies.

“We are looking into all possible angles, including whether there was any criminal intent,” he said.

He assured the public that thorough investigations are underway and that anyone found culpable will be held accountable in accordance with the law.

The revelations have sparked concern among residents and families who have previously relied on the facility, with some expressing fears over the possibility of misidentification of bodies.

Amin urged members of the public who may have been affected to come forward and assist investigators with information that could help establish the full extent of the problem.

He also called on hospital management to cooperate fully with investigators and to take immediate steps to address the gaps identified in the mortuary’s operations.

Health experts say proper documentation and tagging procedures are essential in maintaining order and dignity in handling the dead, as well as ensuring that families are able to conduct burials without confusion or delay.

The incident has also renewed calls for stricter oversight of mortuary services in public hospitals, with stakeholders urging relevant authorities to enforce standards and regular audits.

Amin emphasised that restoring confidence in the system is a priority, noting that the DCI will work closely with other agencies to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

“As investigations continue, our goal is to establish the truth and ensure justice for all affected families,” he said.
