Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Oginga has called for unity within the party, saying it will not resort to expelling members but will instead embrace inclusivity while upholding democratic principles.

Speaking during a party event, Oburu addressed internal concerns and divisions, emphasising the need for cohesion as ODM navigates its current challenges.

He made a direct appeal while referencing his daughter, Winnie Odinga, in remarks that underscored the party’s approach to leadership and membership.

“I want to tell my daughter Winnie that we are not going to expel people. We’re going to be a party of including people and asking them to come in.

But we are also going to maintain democratic principles. Democracy does not mean chaos,” Oburu said.

His comments come at a time when the party has been grappling with internal disagreements that have played out in public, raising questions about unity and discipline within its ranks.

Oburu stressed that while ODM remains open to accommodating diverse views, it must also maintain order and respect for its structures.

He noted that inclusivity should not be confused with disorder, adding that members must operate within the framework of the party’s rules.

The ODM leader reiterated that the party’s strength lies in its ability to bring people together, rather than pushing them away.

He said encouraging dialogue and participation would help address differences and build a stronger political movement.

At the same time, he cautioned against actions that could undermine the party’s stability, warning that indiscipline and chaos would not be tolerated.

According to him, democracy must be exercised responsibly, with members respecting both leadership and established procedures.

His remarks were seen as an attempt to strike a balance between openness and control within the party, especially as leaders work to manage differing opinions among members.

The reference to Winnie Odinga highlighted ongoing conversations within the party, particularly among younger leaders and supporters who have been vocal about reforms and direction.

Oburu’s message appeared aimed at reassuring members that ODM remains committed to its democratic ideals, while also setting clear expectations on conduct and unity.

Party officials present at the event echoed the call for calm and cooperation, urging members to prioritise the party’s long-term goals over individual differences.

The gathering provided a platform for leaders to reflect on the party’s direction and the need to maintain a united front in the face of political challenges.

Delegates were encouraged to engage constructively and support efforts to strengthen the party.

Oburu’s statement adds to a series of messages from ODM leaders seeking to calm tensions and reinforce cohesion within the party.
