Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has announced that he will hold a parallel National Delegates Convention (NDC), which he has dubbed the “People’s NDC,” during a tour in Nairobi County.

Sifuna made the announcement while engaging residents on the Linda Mwananchi campaign tour, emphasising that the move aims to give party delegates a platform to express their views freely amid growing unrest within ODM.

“This is the people’s NDC. We wantdelegates to be heard, and their concerns addressed,” Sifuna said, highlighting that internal party processes must be transparent and inclusive.

The announcement comes a day before ODM’s official NDC is scheduled to take place, where the party expects a large turnout of delegates.

The party’s leadership has been preparing for the event amid reports of dissatisfaction and disquiet among some members regarding candidate nominations and internal elections.

Sifuna said the parallel NDC is not intended to undermine ODM but rather to provide a forum for delegates who feel their voices are not being fully represented.

He noted that internal party democracy is critical for strengthening the party and ensuring unity.

“There is a need for accountability, openness, and respect for the voices of delegates. This NDC will ensure that everyone participates meaningfully,” Sifuna added.

Political observers say the move signals growing tension within ODM, as the party leadership faces pressure to address grievances and manage competing factions.

The parallel NDC could influence the dynamics of candidate nominations and the party’s overall cohesion ahead of the general election.

Sifuna also used the Linda Mwananchi tour to engage with Nairobi residents on local issues, stressing the importance of participatory governance and community involvement in political processes.

He encouraged party supporters to remain calm and continue focusing on development and service delivery, despite the ongoing debates within ODM.

Sifuna said he remains committed to strengthening the party by listening to grassroots concerns and promoting internal reforms.

ODM officials, however, have urged members to attend the official NDC as planned, describing it as the legitimate process for selecting party leadership and setting strategic directions.

The party leadership has assured delegates that all protocols will be followed to ensure a fair and transparent convention.

The unfolding situation highlights the challenges facing ODM in balancing leadership authority with internal democracy.

Analysts note that the party’s ability to manage internal differences effectively will be key to presenting a united front during the 2026 general elections.

As ODM prepares for its official NDC, attention is now focused on how Sifuna’s parallel convention will affect delegate turnout, party unity, and the perception of internal party democracy.
