Kalonzo noted that Tuju has been recovering from injuries sustained in a past road accident, and his condition requires careful medical attention.
While in custody, Tuju was reportedly examined by doctors from Karen Hospital who had been called to assess his health.
Kalonzo said the medical team carried out checks while Tuju was still inside a police cell, a setting he felt was not suitable for proper medical care.
What stood out most to him, he said, was the doctors’ report about Tuju’s blood sugar levels.
According to Kalonzo, the medics indicated that the level had dropped to 1.9, a reading that can be dangerous if not handled quickly.
“That is what made me lose my cool,” Kalonzo said, adding that he could not understand why someone in such a condition was still being held at the station instead of being taken to hospital.
He questioned the decision to keep Tuju in custody despite the clear medical concerns raised by professionals.
In his view, health should come first, regardless of the circumstances surrounding a person’s arrest or investigation.
Kalonzo also raised broader concerns about how such situations are handled, calling for respect for human dignity and proper medical care for those in custody.
He said the incident he witnessed, combined with Tuju’s condition, points to the need for greater accountability.
