Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has condemned the demolition of traders’ premises at Gikomba, terming the move unlawful and a violation of the rights of small-scale business owners.

In a statement, Owino said he stood in solidarity with the traders, many of whom depend on their daily earnings to support their families.

He described them as hardworking individuals who play a critical role in sustaining the local economy.

“Today I stood in solidarity with the hardworking traders of Gikomba whose livelihoods have been unjustly disrupted.

These are men and women who wake up before dawn, who toil every day to provide for their families and keep our local economy alive,” he said.

The legislator expressed concern that the demolitions were carried out despite the traders having obtained court orders to protect their businesses. He termed the action not only illegal but also unjust.

“Despite obtaining court orders to protect their businesses, their premises were still demolished.

This is not just a violation of the law; it is a violation of dignity, trust, and justice,” Owino said.

The Gikomba market, one of the largest open-air markets in Nairobi, is a major hub for small-scale traders dealing in clothes, household items, and other goods.

Any disruption to operations at the market often affects thousands of livelihoods.

Owino said the incident highlights a broader concern about the disregard for the rule of law, particularly when it comes to protecting ordinary citizens.

He warned that such actions undermine public confidence in institutions meant to uphold justice.

“We cannot build a fair society if the rule of law is ignored, especially at the expense of ordinary citizens,” he said.

The MP called for accountability from those responsible for the demolitions and urged authorities to respect court orders in future.

He emphasised the need to safeguard the rights of traders, noting that they are among the most vulnerable groups in the economy.

“I stand firmly with the Gikomba traders in demanding accountability, respect for court orders, and protection of their rights,” he added.

The demolitions have sparked concern among traders and residents, with some questioning the circumstances under which the exercise was conducted. Others have called for compensation for those who suffered losses.

Owino reiterated his support for the affected traders, saying their struggle reflects the challenges faced by many Kenyans trying to make an honest living.

“Their struggle is our struggle. Their resilience is our inspiration. We will not be silent,” he said.

His remarks add to growing calls from leaders and stakeholders for authorities to address the situation and ensure justice for the affected traders.
