“I do not know why you are bothered about how I eat, yet I do not eat at your wife’s place,” he said while addressing supporters. “I do not look for food at your wife’s place or your people’s place.”
His remarks triggered laughter and applause from the crowd, many of whom appeared to support his strong response.
Matiang’i continued by explaining that he is comfortable with his lifestyle and has no reason to explain himself to people who question him unnecessarily.
The former government official said he lives a simple life and often eats common local foods when he is in his home region. According to him, there is nothing unusual about that.
“I eat bananas and ugali in Kisii,” he said, referring to traditional foods commonly eaten in the region.
“If that is what is bothering you, why have I not asked you why you are thin?”
His comments were widely seen as a direct message to critics who have been making personal remarks about him in recent weeks.
Although he did not mention specific individuals, his words suggested frustration with people who focus on private matters instead of discussing issues that affect the public.
Supporters present at the event cheered his remarks, saying the comments showed he was confident and unbothered by criticism.
Some said the statement reflected his straightforward personality, which many Kenyans came to know during his time in government.
Matiang’i previously served in several senior positions in government, including as Cabinet Secretary for Interior.
During his time in office, he was known for his firm approach to leadership and his willingness to speak directly when responding to issues.
Political observers say leaders in the public eye often face both political criticism and personal attacks, especially during periods of heightened political activity.
As a result, many politicians occasionally respond strongly when they feel the criticism has crossed into personal territory.
For Matiang’i, the message during his speech was clear. He believes the public conversation should focus on serious matters rather than personal lifestyle choices.
He told the crowd that people should respect each other’s private lives and avoid spreading unnecessary criticism.
Those who attended the event later said the remarks showed that Matiang’i remains outspoken and confident when addressing both supporters and critics.
