Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has raised concern over a shortage of marriage certificates and delays in the registration of marriages across the country, warning that the situation is causing distress among couples and church officials involved in the process.

In their latest statement, the bishops said that the shortage of certificates has led to significant disruptions in the formalisation of marriages, with many couples experiencing prolonged waiting periods after completing church ceremonies.

They noted that the delays are affecting both religious institutions and civil registration offices responsible for issuing the documents.

According to the KCCB, the backlog in processing marriage certificates is also slowing down the registration system, making it difficult for couples to obtain legal recognition of their unions in a timely manner.

The bishops expressed concern that the situation may undermine confidence in the civil registration process if not urgently addressed.

They further pointed out that churches, which play a central role in solemnising marriages, are increasingly facing challenges in guiding couples through the legal requirements due to the unavailability of certificates.

This, they said, has created confusion and frustration among congregants who expect a smooth transition from church ceremonies to official registration.

The bishops called on the relevant government authorities to urgently address the shortage and streamline the issuance process to ensure efficiency and reliability.

They stressed that marriage is an important institution that requires proper documentation and timely recognition to protect the rights of couples and families.

The KCCB also urged improved coordination between religious institutions and government agencies involved in marriage registration.

They said that stronger collaboration would help reduce delays and ensure that couples are not left in limbo after formal ceremonies.

They warned that continued inefficiencies could lead to a growing backlog, further straining an already burdened system.

The bishops emphasised the need for adequate supply of certificates and better logistical planning to prevent future shortages.
