Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has condemned the recent increase in fuel prices, terming it a direct blow to households already struggling with the high cost of living.

In a statement shared on his X account on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, Natembeya said the latest rise in petrol and diesel prices, which have now surpassed Ksh200 per litre in major towns, reflects more than just global market pressures.

“Kenyans have once again been hit with a painful fuel price increase, pushing petrol and diesel beyond Ksh200 per litre in major towns. This is not just a number; it is a direct attack on the cost of living.

While the government blames global oil prices and international conflicts, the truth is that poor policy decisions, excessive taxation, and lack of proper planning have made the situation worse,” Natembeya said.

The governor argued that while fluctuations in global oil prices and geopolitical tensions may influence fuel costs, domestic factors are playing a significant role in the current situation.

He pointed to what he described as overreliance on taxation and weak policy frameworks in the energy sector, which he said have worsened the burden on ordinary Kenyans.

Natembeya warned that the rising cost of fuel is likely to trigger a ripple effect across the economy, pushing up the prices of basic goods and services.

He noted that transport costs are expected to increase, which in turn affects food prices and other essential commodities, further straining household budgets.

He expressed concern that the continued rise in fuel prices could slow economic activity and deepen financial hardship for many families, especially those already grappling with limited incomes.

According to the governor, urgent interventions are needed to cushion citizens from the impact of rising energy costs.

Natembeya also called for a review of the current taxation regime on petroleum products, urging the national government to consider measures that would ease the burden on consumers.

He emphasised the need for better planning and transparency in the energy sector to ensure that pricing mechanisms are fair and sustainable.
