Man from Gichugu in Kirinyaga County is in police custody after allegedly killing his wife following a dispute over the sale of a family cow.

Daniel Gichira is accused of killing his 48-year-old wife, Ann Nyawira, at their home before dumping her body near Kabare Shopping Centre along the Kutus–Kimunye road, about 500 metres from their homestead.

According to family members, Nyawira was last seen on Saturday before she went missing, prompting concern among relatives who were unable to reach her.

Her brother, David Ndege, said the family began making inquiries after repeated attempts to contact her failed.

“He told us she had gone to her sister’s home in Mwea,” Ndege said. “We went to Mwea to look for her, but she was not there.”

The explanation raised suspicion among family members, who said it did not align with Nyawira’s usual communication.

Ndege noted that the family became increasingly worried as more time passed without any contact from her.

Together with other relatives, including the deceased’s sister Nancy Wambui, the family began planning to formally report her missing and organise a search.

However, before they could do so, they received distressing phone calls from members of the public reporting that a woman’s body had been found dumped in the area.

The family rushed to the scene near Kabare Shopping Centre, where they positively identified the body as that of Nyawira.

The discovery brought to an end the search, but also deepened the shock and grief among relatives.

Police officers responded to the incident and launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Gichira was later arrested and is currently being held in police custody as investigations continue.

Authorities have not yet released full details of the incident, but preliminary reports indicate that the couple had disagreements prior to the woman’s disappearance.

Investigators are working to establish the sequence of events leading to her death.

The incident has left the local community in shock, with residents expressing concern over rising cases of domestic disputes escalating into violence.

Neighbours described the couple as generally private, though some acknowledged that disagreements were not uncommon in many households.

Family members have called for justice, urging authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

They described Nyawira as a caring individual whose sudden death has left a significant gap in the family.
