Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has said that President William Ruto directed that kerosene prices remain unchanged, even as petrol and diesel prices increased.

Speaking in Siaya County on Wednesday, April 15, Wandayi urged Kenyans not to panic, noting that the government has already taken steps to cushion consumers from the impact of the latest fuel price adjustments.

“Yesterday you saw the hike in fuel prices, but I want to tell you, do not have any worry,” he said while leading a mass voter registration and sensitisation exercise in Ugunja.

Wandayi explained that the decision to maintain kerosene prices was aimed at protecting low-income households that rely on the fuel for cooking and lighting.

He noted that the directive from the Head of State was part of broader efforts to ease the burden on vulnerable groups amid rising energy costs.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, the government also introduced a fuel subsidy worth Ksh6.2 billion to cushion consumers from what could have been a steeper increase at the pump.

He said the subsidy was intended to stabilise prices and limit the impact of global market pressures on local fuel costs.

Wandayi attributed the rise in petrol and diesel prices to a combination of international oil price fluctuations and other external factors, but maintained that government interventions had helped to moderate the overall increase.

He reiterated that the administration remains committed to ensuring that essential commodities remain affordable, especially for households already grappling with the high cost of living.

The CS added that measures are being reviewed continuously to respond to changing market conditions.

The remarks come amid public concern over the rising cost of fuel, which has seen petrol and diesel prices cross the Ksh200 per litre mark in several parts of the country.

The increase is expected to have a ripple effect on transport and the cost of basic goods and services.

Wandayi said the government is aware of the pressure the price changes may place on households and businesses, and assured Kenyans that efforts are ongoing to manage the situation.

He also encouraged citizens to remain patient and supportive as the government navigates the challenges posed by the global energy market.

According to him, maintaining stability in the sector requires a balance between market realities and consumer protection.
