The National Police Service (NPS) has expressed sympathy to the families of two individuals who were killed during demonstrations in Embu County, and pledged transparency and accountability in investigating the incident.

In a statement shared on its X account on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the NPS confirmed that the fatalities occurred during protests in Ishiara, Mbeere North.

The demonstrations werereportedly sparked by growing public anger over the condition of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.

According to the police, the Office of the Inspector General had earlier issued a press statement outlining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The protests are said to have been driven by concerns from residents who have long complained about the state of the facility, which they described as inadequate and poorly maintained.

“The National Police Service commiserates with the families, friends, and relatives of two persons who tragically lost their lives near Ishiara Level 4 Hospital, Embu County, yesterday, April 14, 2026.

Any loss of life is something that the Service takes great exception to, as one life lost is one too many,” the NPS said in a statement.

The police did not provide further details on the exact circumstances that led to the deaths but assured the public that investigations are underway.

Authorities said they are committed to establishing the facts surrounding the incident and ensuring that those responsible are held to account.

The NPS emphasised that it recognises the seriousness of the situation and the concerns raised by the local community.

It noted that the right to peaceful assembly is protected under the law, but urged citizens to exercise that right in a lawful and orderly manner.

Residents of Ishiara had taken to the streets to protest what they described as the deteriorating condition of the Level 4 hospital, citing a lack of essential services, equipment, and personnel.

The demonstrations quickly escalated, leading to confrontation and, ultimately, the loss of two lives.

The police service reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law while also safeguarding the rights and freedoms of citizens.

It said that maintaining public safety remains a top priority, even as investigations into the incident continue.

The deaths have raised fresh concerns over how protests are managed and the broader issues affecting service delivery in public health facilities.

Local leaders and residents have called for urgent action to address the challenges facing Ishiara Level 4 Hospital, which has been at the centre of the protests.
